The first thing you need to do is understand why you need to quit. Gather as many information as you can about how to help stop smoking and learn from the experience of others. After a while, your desire to quit smoking will be founded by real facts. If you know you want to quit, don’t think too much about it, just quit as soon as you can make up a plan. You will learn from other people that there is no masked secret which only those who stopped smoking know, and that the only thing that matters is personal will.
Why you should be quitting
Make a list with all your reasons, which might include:
-You will increase you life expectancy and will live a better life.
- You diminish the risks of developing a cardiovascular disease, a cancer or a stroke.
- You will stop hurting those in your family who have to breathe in your smoke.
- You will find that you are still able to practice a sport or to go through a day without sleeping all afternoon.
- You will now have money to buy yourself that perfume you always wanted.
Write down everything that happens when you quit
There is no greater weapon than your own words. A secret journal will help you evaluate all your reasons when it becomes hard to stay away from cigarettes. In this journal, you can provide answers to questions like:
How did smoking affected and influenced your life so far?
Where does you life need improvement?
What can you do to change the home or work environment where everyone smokes?
Are there things you like about a cigarette?
What are the things you hate about cigarettes?
Are there persons that can help you quit?
What are the quitting benefits for you?
Think of a date you want to quit
The sooner, the better. Be sure you pick a date before you have time to change your mind. Better think of a period that is not very stressful Plan a tight schedule for the first few days. These are the hardest days and if you don’t have many responsibilities, you’d better choose either a few days off or some heavy days in which you know that because of the tight schedule you won’t have the time to think about cigarettes.
The first few days are different from person to person, some want to relax, others to do as many things as possible. Others prefer sleeping. What to do during these few days is a thing we decide alone. If this resumes to simply laying for a few days in bed, do not hesitate. These few days you will experience sever addiction symptoms, but they will pass. Don’t let the process of returning to a normal life scare you. In the end, you will become a normal un-addicted person who has quit smoking, that can be proud of his or hers accomplishment.
