White van man struggles to quit smoking

No Smoking Day is here again, and the research shows that it is still the territory of manual workers throughout the UK. Perhaps the worst offenders are the white van men, secretaries and builders rather than the professional types like managers and doctors.

A fall in smoking prevalence amongst professional people is reported in the research conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), compared with a much slower reduction with manual and routine workers.

BBC Dragon’s Den star and No Smoking Day president Duncan Bannatyne says, “These findings show that whilst we are succeeding in controlling the smoking epidemic amongst the better off, cigarettes are now the primary cause of health inequalities in the UK.”

“There is good news for most smokers – you definitely want to quit, and with the expectation that approximately 1 million will quit smoking on No Smoking Day 2010, the downward trend in smoking looks set to go on”. And with the NHS Stop Smoking Services, there’s never been a better time to quit; you’re four times more likely to succeed with NHS support.”

Andy McEwen, Assistant Director Tobacco Studies, University College London says, “We know it is not due to difference in motivation to quit but those from poorer backgrounds do seem to find it hard to succeed. It could be due to a number of different reasons: availability of cigarettes, less acceptance from society and a higher level of dependence of nicotine”.

Duncan Bannatyne kicks off this year’s No Smoking Day campaign with the launch of a new website (ww.wequit.co.uk), featuring Queen’s song ‘I want to break free’.

Now in its 27th year, the No Smoking Day campaign is run by a charity sharing the same name, in conjunction with a number of public health agencies in the UK.
