A lot of people who are addicted to smoking end up being angry and frustrated as a result of quitting their unhealthy habit. More than giving up the smoking habit, the actual challenge occurs when these nicotine withdrawal symptoms come into surface. Some people use nicotine replacement therapies that include nicotine patches, nicotine gums, etc. Although such treatments are at times effective, it might not always be enough to help a person quit smoking once and for all. This is where the Zyban quit smoking drug comes into focus.

The history of the Zyban quit smoking drug is quite interesting. Although many relate Zyban with quitting smoking, it was actually used as an anti-depressant in the past. Bupropion, the active ingredient in Zyban, was first found in the anti-depressant medication Wellbutrin. This was first used to lessen the desire for cigarettes. Studies that were later carried out proved that the drug was also effective in treating people who were addicted to smoking.  Once this was known, the producers of the drug Wellbutrin repackaged, renamed and marketed it as the Zyban quit smoking drug.

Zyban comes in a pill form which is prescribed by many doctors today. Unlike the nicotine patches or gum, the Zyban quit smoking drug does not increase more nicotine in the body. While the drug decreases the cravings a person has towards nicotine, it also lessens nicotine withdrawal symptoms such as depression, irritability, anger, anxiety, etc. The Zyban quit smoking drug is generally used for a minimum period of 8 to 12 weeks, taken twice daily. Once the addiction has subsided, it is advisable to discontinue the use of the drug.

Like every other quit smoking drug, Zyban too comes with a set of side effects. These include; dry mouth, dizziness, sleeping disorders, an occurrence of a skin rash, headaches, excessive sweating, etc. Pregnant women and one’s who are nursing are not advised to use this drug as this can hurt the child. Zyban is very popular as an anti-depressant mainly because unlike other medications Zyban does not cause any sexual dysfunctions in people, making them live a better life.

In addition to all the above stated side effects, the Bupropion in the drug has resulted in a number of seizures. Due to this reason, doctors rarely prescribe the Zyban quit smoking drug to anyone who suffer from epileptic conditions. Whatever said and done, it is always beneficial to get the advise from a qualified specialist before consuming any drug.
