Stop Smoking Medication Options

There are so many ways to stop smoking for good ranging from cold turkey to hypnosis and using presecription medications.

Have you thought about using medication prescribed to you so you can quit for good?

There are two prescriptions (Chantix and Zyban); which claim to help people stop smoking for the rest of their lives. We are going to take a deeper look into these stop smoking medications to find out what works and which one may be right for you.

Chantix- Made by Pfizer, this medication releases low doses of dopamine into your system and blocks nicotine receptors, which lessens the desire to smoke. When you relapse, a cigarette lacks the same effect that it once had, making it less desirable.

Studies show that after twelve months between 14 and 23% are smoke free. However, many end up smoking again after twelve weeks, which shows a low success rate among those who use the product.

There are also side effects that come with taking Chantix, that include: changes in the way food tastes, vivid dreams, insomnia, gassiness, vomiting, headache, and nausea.

It also states that taking Chantix can increase severe depression, and one could experience suicidal thoughts.

If you are pregnant, you should not take this medication due to lack of studies on pregnant or breastfeeding women. If you are suffering from kidney problems or on dialysis, please ask your doctor for a lower dosage of Chanitx.

Zyban- Created by GlaxoSmithKline, this is the same medication as Wellbutrin, which is an antidepressant medication. Like Chantix, small doses of dopamine, releases itself into the body, which lessens the desire to smoke.

Zyban has a 15-25% success rate, with some studies stating a 58% success rate after twelve months. However, the long-term rate is lowers because of relapsing after being smoke free for a short time.

Zyban’s side effects include dry mouth and difficulty sleeping. You should not take Zyban, if you are suffering from seizures or are taking Wellbutrin.

Stop smoking medication may help with your desire to become smoke free, yet you should consider the side affects.
