The phrase “Smokers Face” was added to the Medical Dictionary in 1985. It refers to the characteristics of wrinkles and lines surrounding the eyes and lips – it also includes the general signs associated with aging, which are made worse by smoking.

Despite the media attention and the tens of millions of dollars every year spent on cosmetics and anti-wrinkle treatments, many millions more are spent on the single worst habit to exagerate the problem and make dealing with it worse.

It is probably safe to say that the majority of people agree that cigarette smoke (in fact any type of smoking) impacts heavily on our health in a negative way It is sometimes less appreciated though that it impacts our skins health and appearance through the release of free radicals.

These “imbalanced particles” react with our skin by damaging perfectly healthy cells in the outermost epidermis layer. The damge they inflict on the skin is cumulative and as a person ages, the combined affect can be huge.

It isn’t only free radicals which are found in every puff of smoke which affect our appearance. The act of smoking also depletes the level of Vitamin C stored within the body. This essential vitamin is directly involved in the creation of collagen which is a vital component of healthy looking skin.

In addition to this, Vitamin C is also a powerful anti-oxidant which assist greatly in reducing the effect of free radicals. So not only does the skin lose its ability to renew itself, it also suffers from the lost ability to defend itsef from aging in the first instance.

So amongst the thousands of anti aging treatments an easy and methods of avoiding face wrinkles is to stop smoking and reduce any type of exposure to smoky environments. Of course, there are many other important factors which make the stopping of smoking a great benefit to your health and general wellbeing. It is of course a sound idea not to start in the first instance!
