Reports have indicated that over 400,000 people are killed annualy in the United States because of illnesses caused by the smoke of cigarettes. People who smoke regularly make up 90% of recorded deaths from Lung Cancer. Smoking is also linked to the development of other forms of cancer such as cancer of the larynx, oral cavity, bladder, pancreas and kidney.

There are some other side effects that develop even more quickly. For instance, smokers quickly develop stains on their fingers and teeth. The body is also put through a mild attack of Carbon Mono oxide poisoning every time smoking is done.

Sadly, the risk of smoking is not only limited to smokers. It is also known to affect non smokers as well. Statistics from the United Environmental Protection agency, suggests that second hand smoking (the inhalation of smoke by people next to smoker) is the cause of about 35,000 deaths each year. Quitting smoking carries with it many advantages; smokers are able to effectively reduce the risk of them developing potentially fatal diseases. Some of the other advantages from quitting smoking are less expenses, reduced health insurance premiums and ultimately improved social standing.

Unfortunately, quitting smoking is known to be difficult because of the addictive effects of Nicotine. The process however can be done assisted along with a number of methods.

Nicotine patches and Nicotine gums are common methods employed by smokers who wish to quit. This satiates the body’s need for nicotine without the person having to go through the process of smoking. Over the time, the use of these patches can then be dropped.

Nicotine nasal sprays and inhalers are also effective means that can be adapted.

Social groups provide invaluable support for people trying to stop smoking. Within this medium can be found individuals who have successfully stopped smoking.
