Common methods to quit smoking are gradually reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke and going cold turkey (completely stopping from day one).
The slow method of gradual reduction can be less stressful by implementing such aids as:
- getting the support from or at least the awareness of most of the people you deal with on a daily basis so they can either help encourage you to quit smoking or try to avoid getting on your bad side as you go through your irritation stage
- joining some kind of quit smoking support group
- helping your body to detox from the nicotine and other chemicals by drinking plenty of water, fruit juice and getting enough fiber by eating fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains
- cutting your cravings by substituting cigarettes with nuts, fruits, sugar-free cinnamon flavored gum, low fat whole grain snacks, drinking lobelia herb tea and using nicotine patches, nasal sprays or inhalers you can ask your physician about
- avoid gaining weight as you quit by not eating after 6pm, eating mostly healthy low fat food and avoiding sugary foods or food that contains saturated fat
- you can keep your weight and cravings under better control by adopting an outdoor exercise routine such as jogging, bike riding or even just a brisk walk every day
- reduce your stress levels by thinking ahead, of different ways to avoid stressful situations all together (which people you want to try and stay away from for example, not starting any new projects or taking on any new responsibilities) and using your vacation time to stop smoking
- other helpful ways to manage stress while you’re trying to quit is by either drinking skullcap or Valerian tea or taking a mood stabilizer as prescribed by your doctor and avoid drinking caffeinated beverages
These methods to quit smoking should also be used when attempting to quit the cold turkey way as well.Quitting cold turkey can be more stressful but has a better success rate.
Which ever methods to quit smoking you use, just remember if you do slip up at some point, don’t be too hard on yourself, just start over again, reminding yourself of all the important reasons you want to quit, dedicate yourself to follow the same helpful strategies as before and you’ll be on your way to successful cessation.
